I recently hiked from the end of the road to the west side of Kupaianaha shield near Pu'u O'o for my New Lava Eruption in Kilauea video on July 21, 2007. This was a roundtrip distance of 16 miles from 7 AM to 10 PM. I carried a backpack weighing about 30 pounds. There is an elevation gain of about 2500 feet. This trip would have been in the same area and similar distance as when the Bear was dropped off. I am 64 years old. If I had been dropped off at the top by a chopper I would have hiked the eight miles to the bottom in about five hours with no pack. Since it's all downhill I could have made it with no water. A much younger man and in better physical shape like the Bear could probably make it in three hours. There were a few spots where care had to be taken not to break thru brittle lava, but nothing like the a'a flows shown on the television program.

Thanks for the pics and references. I've put the pictures in their respective articles. Once again, I really appreciate it! Things like this build an ever stronger case against the fakery and bad advice in the show. -- Rei 11:10, 15 August 2007 (CDT)
