Claim: Swimming a major river to get to the other side, such as the Colorado, is rarely advisable.

Man vs Wild is nothing if not full of dangerous stunts that should not be done in survival situations. Among those is the "Moab Desert" episode in which Bear swims across the Colorado river. Major rivers tend to be settled on both sides, have boats travelling up and down them, have shady sides (if steep), have plants and wildlife living on the coastline, have roads running along them, and in general are ideal places to survive, get rescued or even to rescue yourself. They also tend to be fast-flowing (sweeping you downstream into dangers that you can't see), have strong, unpredictble currents, and in general are not the safest places to swim. Rarely is risking your life in this manner advisable.

In particular, the Colorado River in Arches and Canyonlands (the "Moab Desert" region the episode is filmed in) is extensively rafted.
