Racist slur

Confirmed: Bear uses racist slur.

In the Sierra Nevada episode, as can be seen in this clip YouTube - Man vs. Wild -Hunting Rabbit (official DiscoveryNetworks youtube channel), he says in a voice over "I'm grinding this piece of cedar, into an Injun throwing stick. Native Americans chose cedar, because its one of the hardest woods, and makes for a perfect weapon. Smoothing it down like this, will make it fast and deadly in the air."

Injun - an offensive term for a Native American.

[edit] Analysis

Oppose: I will not contend the fact that he said "Injun," nor will I contend the fact that "Injun" is used as a racist slur. But Bear is not trying to insult anyone. This is probably the only time I will defend him. After all, "Injun" is just a syllable away from "Indian," which I'm sure he meant. While it is there, it is not an outright insult to the native people from which he borrows the idea for a throwing stick.

Oppose: Bear is not American, so he is probably not concerned with insulting Indians. What is offensive to Americans may not be offensive to the rest of the world, and vice versa.

  • Support: He's recording an American TV show, so he needs to conform to American standards.
