Not spotting the ocean from the summit
From BearWiki
Claim: The ocean is visible from the top of the volcanic vent Bear supposedly lands near.
View of ocean from about the 1000 foot elevation of Pulama Pali. The small cluster of vehicle just right of center near the coast is the end of Highway 130. It is actually gravel at this point. The green forest on the left and some of the smaller forest kipukas shown on the television video are visible from here.
This is the view down from about the 2000 foot elevation on the top of Pulama Pali and the same location as the shot towards Pu'u O'o shown in another photograph, also taken on August 14, 2005. The ocean would have been visible all the way down to the base of Pulama Pali. No need to use the trade winds (which are not present all the time)
Throughout the episode, Bear struggles to find the ocean, only finding it near the end.
Pu'u O'o is clearly visible for many miles on the flats above Pulama Pali. The ocean is also visible from the top and all the way down to the base of Pulama Pali so there should not have been a big mystery of which way to go to find the ocean on a clear day. The steam plume from the ocean entry of the lava flow is also clearly visible from most areas between Pu'u O'o and the ocean. It would have been a dead give away of where the ocean is.
