Myth that falling coconuts are significant killers
From BearWiki
Claim: Falling coconuts do not kill 150 people every year.
No need to tackle this one myself; The Straight Dope already has.[1] The short of it: there are no confirmed coconut deaths, and at best, one anecdotal death.
Even if they *did* kill 150 people per year, given that hundreds of millions of people live in tropical regions day in, day out, 150 people would be a tiny blip on the radar.
[edit] Analysis
Oppose: This one is silly. Sure, Bear repeated a widely-held myth. But his point, that you shouldn't sleep under a coconut palm because the falling nuts are heavy and can injure you, was perfectly sound. The article linked to above says as much.
Oppose: The quote is "People die every year of coconuts falling on their heads," not 150. 150 was the number of people that Bear claimed died in rip tides. Always check your facts before you make accusations.
