Man vs Wild
From BearWiki
'Man vs Wild (known as "Born Survivor: Bear Grylls") is a Discovery Channel program, produced by British television company Diverse Bristol, that began airing on November 10th, 2006. An official page linked to by Bear's own website (beargrylls.com) describes the show thusly:
|
"With little more than a knife and the clothes on his back, Bear puts himself in the position of a stranded tourist by parachuting into the middle of some of the world's greatest natural wildernesses, including the Amazon, the swamps of the Everglades, the Alps and the Moab Desert. Followed by an intrepid camera crew, Bear's challenge is to use his survival training and instincts to survive and reach civilisation safely. Along the way he demonstrates how to overcome the worst that the natural world can throw at you, whether it's physical obstacles such as vertical rock faces, stormwater and quicksand, or flora and fauna ranging from alligators to snakes and poisonous plants. In the snows of the Alps he has to preserve warmth, and in the Moab Desert he must stay cool. But ultimately, survival depends on finding something to eat, and Bear finds surprising sources of food. He's not squeamish – he eats maggots and zebra as well as live fish and frogs. As well as providing a thrilling adventure as Bear overcomes apparently impossible odds to get to safety, the series is a valuable guide to some of the basics of survival."[1] |
In forums across the net, a debate has raged: Is the show as described -- an informative guide to survival by a person living the life of a stranded tourist -- or is it a series of staged, pre-planned scenes with dangerous advice mixed in?
