Edited show revelations

The following are revelations that have been made through the editing process. After a series of exposes, Discovery pulled the old episodes of Man vs Wild, edited them, and brought the show back with a disclaimer. From the editing, the following (very incomplete) list of changes has been revealed.

Contents

[edit] General

  • The following band-aid disclaimer has been added to the show: "Bear Grylls and the crew receive support when they are in potentially life threatening situations as required by health and safety regulations. On some occasions, situations are presented to Bear so he can demonstrate survival techniques. Professional advice should always be sought before entering any dangerous environment."

[edit] Season 1

[edit] Rocky Mountains (Pilot)

[edit] Moab Desert

[edit] Costa Rican Rain Forest

[edit] Alaskan Mountain Range

  • Doesn't mention spending the night. He does mention being "cranky" in the morning, however. Perhaps the hotel's bed wasn't comfortable enough, or they didn't have his favorite flavor of jam for breakfast.
  • Fish was caught by one of the crew, not by Bear. It's not mentioned by what method was used to catch the fish (it might have been "caught" at the local grocery store for all we know). So far, Bear hasn't actually "caught" anything in any show.
  • Boat finding/sinking scene seems to have been re-edited to make it clear its more staged, and less real and dramatic.
  • Final scene re-edited to say boat has "been sent" to pick him up.
  • Before climbing down the waterfall, changes the comment from "It's over 200 feet and it's risky" to "It's over 200 feet, and even with a safety line, it's risky."

[edit] Mount Kilauea

[edit] Sierra Nevada

  • Receives help building raft.
  • Receives help building "wiki" camping structure. Also does not mention spending the night.
  • Edited to not claim he caused a pine cone to fall to the ground.
  • Edited to not claim he caught rabbit; instead "we've got hold of a rabbit, so we can show you how to cook it in the wild."
  • "Wild" horse scene removed.

[edit] African Savanna

[edit] European Alps

  • "Crevasse fall" scene staged with safety line.
  • "I'm going to show you how to make a shelter" -> means he did not spend the night.
  • Seems to have been edited to not pretend that Bear is dropped off somewhere and makes his way out naturally, encountering food and other things along the way. It's now edited to be more "demonstration". For example "here's an ant's nest", rather than pretending he just comes across it.
  • Rope-bridge scene is staged (with safety lines).
  • Dead deer scene is also "staged".
  • "Maggots" from deer and used as fish bait are actually mealworms.
  • Didn't catch the trout
  • As Bear parachutes in, he can be seen holding the edges of the parachute fabric, not the brake toggles, suggesting the rough landing was staged.

[edit] Desert Island

[edit] Season 2

[edit] Everglades

[edit] Iceland

  • Admits dead sheep has been placed for him by a local farmer.
  • Edited so that he doesn't claim to have "caught" a ptarmigan.
  • Did not spend night outside.
  • Cliff area is very safe and easily accessible, I went there on a picnic before (Confirmed by a local resident or regional expert)

[edit] Mexico

  • Admits trout have been placed downstream from him.
  • Receives help making his 50 feet of rope from "the crew."
  • Admits to using a "technical harness" on a supposed free climb.

[edit] Kimberley, Australia

  • Did not spend the first night outdoors.
  • Uses rope for climb down tree.
  • "Snake encounter" scene staged.
  • Amends claim that he built the shelter (from the first night) on his own, now stating that he "received help from the crew".

[edit] Ecuador

  • Receives help building ladder.
  • Entire scene of him "sleeping" outdoors cut because he actually "spent the night indoors".
  • Trying to shoot the rodent with the bow. Instead of catching it with his hands or his shirt.

[edit] Scotland

  • Sleeping with the deer skin has been removed; he admits he will not be sleeping in the wild immediately before finding the dead deer.
  • Redacted claim that the deer had fallen down the cliff.
  • Admits he did not actually catch the rabbit in his snare.
  • Admits he will not be staying on the second night, only that he will show how to build a shelter.
  • Admits being close to civilization

[edit] Season 3
