Diving into the ocean to cool down

Claim: Diving into the ocean is a great way to end up covered in lesions.

Bear says that one of the best ways to cool down on the ocean is to jump into the water every few hours[1]. Even if you lash yourself to the raft to avoid being seperated, and even if there are no sharks or other living dangers, you're deliberately worsening one of the biggest problems in ocean survival: lesions.

If you take to the sea (a bad idea if the island can support you), you will be out for a long time. One of the biggest problems you face is that saltwater is a dessicant (dries things), and dried salt abrasive; prolonged exposure to it causes lesions which can become infected.[2][3] It only takes a couple days of exposure to be covered with them.[4] Wasting your coconut oil (which does not protect against the sun, but against salt spray) by swimming it off and getting extra exposure so that you're "cooler" is a great way to invite lesions, infection, and general misery.

[edit] Analysis

Oppose: Poon Lim, who survived for 133 days on a life raft, would swim twice a day in the ocean to stay fit.

Support: And Poon Lim ended up covered in infected sores. Read "Sole Survivor: A Story of Record Endurance At Sea".
