Zion National Park (UT) Two Rafters Drown In Virgin River

On Sunday, April 25th, rangers received a report of an overdue party from a float trip down though the Virgin River Narrows. Investigation revealed that two 23-year-old men from Las Vegas had hiked into the Narrows with the intent of constructing a log raft and floating approximately 50 miles through the Narrows to Hurricane, Utah. The men were not equipped with wetsuits or PFDs, did not have whitewater rafting experience, and had limited camping experience, little food and no overnight gear. They told their father that they intended to record their entire trip on video camera as an entry into the “Man vs. Wild” competition. The SAR operation concluded on April 26th when both bodies and a small amount of personal gear were recovered from the river.

[edit] September 25th, 2007: "Edited" episodes air

The Discovery channel has begun showing "edited" episodes of the series, containing a disclaimer, removing scenes, and having the voiceover indicate fakery. More on that in our edited show revelations section.

[edit] September 4th, 2007: New Season Updates

According to Edward on his blog, it appears that the show is continuing on with its new season. The show is increasing in length from 1 hour to 2 hours in order to accomodate the transparency that the Discovery Channel promised. Bear now stresses that the show is about "extreme" survival, rather than ordinary survival. [2]

[edit] August 12th, 2007: Yet Another Expose

The Daily Mail keeps on going in its series of exposes about the show. This time, it turns out that the Kilauea lava was coals that were brought in and the "deadly gas" was smoke from a smoke machine.[3]

[edit] August 4th, 2007: BearWiki in the News

The BearWiki was quoted as a resource for research regarding the deceptive practices on MvW. [4]

[edit] July 30th, 2007: New Expose

This one is rich. They used a guy in a bear suit in the Rockies because they couldn't find a tame bear, the entire show is based on a script, the snake bear "kills" was found dead on the side of a road, the badger that bear cooks was a steak inside a badger skin, and the parachute-tree scene was staged.[5]

[edit] July 29th, 2007: Episodes pulled

The episodes from Season 1 & 2 seem to have been pulled, apparently to allow them to be edited to be more "transparent" (i.e. less deceptive and inaccurate). All MvW merchandise, including DVDs has been pulled as well.

It will be interesting to see what changes the editors will make.
