Coconut oil to protect against the sun

Claim: Coconut oil is not sunscreen

Coconut oil is not, as bear claims, protection against the sun. It was used by the Polynesians as protection from saltwater[], which can cause lesions after long exposure (see Diving into the ocean to cool down for more discussion of this fact). Quite the opposite, coconut oil is a common base in tanning oil and is widely recognized for this role[1][2]. Coconut oil doesn't increase UV exposure, but has essentially no SPF. Tanning is a skin reaction to damage by UV light[3], so any SPF factor in the oil would be counterproductive.
