Purchasing a Typ-1 takes a $500 deposit. This was to present to investors a consumer base with significant intent to purchase. The deposit goes directly toward your purchase if you accept your purchase offer and is refunded to you if you do not.
Over on Aptera Forum, several out-of-staters who had their order cancelled by the company (for not living in California) reported receiving their deposit back.

When asked for information about their escrow account, Aptera contact Emily Mizutani sent this information[1] for the bank account. When the Pasadena branch of Wells-Fargo was contacted, they confirmed the letter's authenticity and that Aptera was using a properly set up escrow account.[2]
